Kaladin begins the series as a branded slave-turned-bridgeman, a former surgeon's apprentice and spearman haunted by his failure to save his brother Tien and betrayed by the once-revered Highmarshal Amaram. Through his bond with the honorspren Syl, he discovers Stormlight, forges the expendable Bridge Four into a brotherhood, and rescues Dalinar Kholin's army, earning his men's freedom and a captaincy. By Rhythm of War, he is a Windrunner and highmarshal relieved of frontline duty because of battle shock, finding new purpose caring for traumatized soldiers before fighting nearly alone against the Fused occupation of Urithiru, confronting the treacherous Moash, and finally finding peace with Tien's memory.

Description

A young, tall human man with shoulder-length, wavy black hair and dark brown eyes. He wears common spearman’s leathers over dark trousers. Tall, fit and strong, with shoulder-length wavy black hair, often falling in natural curls, and a clean-shaven face. Slave brands, including the glyph shash, mark his forehead; in some scenes his hair partly covers them. His clothing varies, but he is often seen in a blue uniform.
