Lirin is the village surgeon of Hearthstone and father of Kaladin, Tien, and Oroden, a meticulous healer whose devotion to preserving life shapes his eldest son's sense of duty. In The Way of Kings, flashbacks show him trying to steer Kaladin toward surgical study in Kharbranth while weathering Roshone's vindictive campaign against his family, a feud that ends in Tien's conscription and death. By Rhythm of War, Lirin's pacifism has hardened into a philosophy that sets him against Kaladin's life as a soldier. When the Fused occupy Hearthstone, he secretly shelters a Herdazian general, tends unconscious Radiants under enemy watch, and is forced to confront the limits of his convictions, finally promising Hesina he will listen better to the son he fears he has lost.
Description
Lirin is short and middle-aged, with a balding head and dark brown eyes behind spectacles that he wears during surgery. His hands are notably careful and precise, suited to the delicate work of a surgeon. He carries himself in a beaten-down slouch, though his expression and manner can be calm and reassuring. His clothing is practical and unadorned, fitting a working surgeon. Lirin is a shorter, older man with a compact, work-worn frame and a balding head; his remaining white-and-gray hair is kept very short. His face is lined and thoughtful, with an intent expression and spectacles that lend his gaze a precise, observant quality. He wears the practical, unadorned clothing of a surgeon, often with a handkerchief nearby, and a painted shash glyph is visible on his forehead. His still, composed presence carries the quiet authority of someone accustomed to tending carefully to others.
