Tien is the younger son of Lirin and Hesina and the beloved little brother of Kaladin, a small, gentle boy whose gift for finding beauty in simple things lit up his family's life in Hearthstone. In The Way of Kings, Roshone conscripts the underage Tien out of spite toward Lirin, and Kaladin enlists alongside him, vowing to bring him home; Tien's death on the battlefield becomes the wound that drives Kaladin's obsession with protecting others. By Rhythm of War, Tien persists as memory, nightmare, and vision: Moash invokes his death to justify killing Roshone, Kaladin's darkest dreams twist him into Amaram's messenger, and finally a vision of Tien helps Kaladin accept that their time together mattered even though he could not save him.
Description
A small, spindly boy with a round face and flushed cheeks, appearing younger than his age. His unruly mop of black and brown hair is described at thirteen; at ten, his hair is called dark. At thirteen he remains small for his age. In the recruitment scene he wears an oversized long raincoat and wide-brimmed hat. Tien is remembered as a young boy, though the text supplies no exact height, build, skin tone, hair color, eye color, or distinctive facial features. He carries a wooden horse, a small detail that lends him a gentle, childlike quality. His clothing is not described in detail, and his overall presence is best imagined as soft and unassuming rather than imposing.
