Clarissa is Jules-Pierre Mao’s daughter. Her father’s arrest and their shared history shape her identity and guilt; she thinks of him while imprisoned and sees a resemblance between him and Cortez.

Clarissa admired and resented Julie, measuring herself against her accomplished older sister. Julie’s departure from the family became a formative rupture and a source of Clarissa’s resentment.
