Naomi Nagata is a tall, low-gravity-raised Belter engineer who begins the series as chief engineer of the ice hauler Canterbury, working alongside executive officer James Holden. After the Canterbury's destruction she becomes the technical heart of the Rocinante's crew, and her professional bond with Holden deepens into a committed romance. In Caliban's War she emerges as a capable operational leader, hacking Ganymede's security, coordinating missions remotely, posing as captain of the Somnambulist, and challenging Holden's suspicions of Fred Johnson. Her principled stand against Holden's increasingly reckless and violent turn leads her to briefly leave the ship, testing the relationship before the crew reunites.

Description

Naomi Nagata is a towering Belter nearly two meters tall with a long thin frame, improbable lightweight bones, and the easy grace of someone raised in low gravity. She possesses deep brown skin, black curly hair kept shiny and typically tied back in a tail with a red band though loose locks often fall across her face, and dark eyes with a hint of epicanthic fold set in features displaying an unusual far-flung racial mix with full lips that press thin when serious or curve into mischievous smiles. Her practical greasy or gray coveralls show her engineering work, a three-inch scar with uneven rippling edges marks her back just above the left buttock, and her expressions range from half-amused annoyance to sleepy sensuality or clever intensity. A long and thin Belter woman with long, curly black hair pulled into an unruly tail and striking features described as a mix of Asian, South American, and African. She has long, slender hands and is notably agile in microgravity. In chapter 2 she wears an ill-fitting Martian naval officer’s jumpsuit. A human woman with masses of glossy black curls, sometimes worn loose and sometimes pulled back into a thick tail. Her eyes are dark and almond-shaped. She is described as skinny; her movements are graceful and well-balanced.
