Frederick Lucius Johnson, a former Earth general turned leader of the Outer Planets Alliance, enters the series as a commanding, warm-smiling power broker who offers James Holden and his crew sanctuary on Tycho Station in exchange for their testimony and cooperation. Over the course of Leviathan Wakes he becomes the Rocinante crew's patron and employer, giving them work and a home base. In Caliban's War that alliance fractures when Holden accuses him of complicity in the protomolecule experiments behind the Ganymede crisis, and Fred, resentful of Holden's self-righteousness, fires him. At the same time Fred emerges as a serious political and military player, demonstrating the OPA's offensive reach against Nguyen's forces while Avasarala seeks a quiet back-channel to him.
Description
A dark-skinned older man with graying hair and the heavy facial bones of an Earther stands with a heavy build and a neck ropy with old muscle. His broad face holds eyes that convey hardness mixed with amused respect or narrow thoughtful intensity, frequently breaking into a warm smile that reaches them fully. He moves with authoritative posture and a straight spine befitting a former general and current OPA leader, typically wearing a blue button-down shirt with slacks or a formal tunic while commanding any room he enters. A human man with a large dark face. Other physical details are not established in this appearance.
