James Holden begins the series as the idealistic, Montana-raised executive officer of the ice hauler Canterbury, whose decision to broadcast the truth about the ship's destruction plunges the solar system toward war and sets him on a path alongside Josephus Miller to stop the protomolecule on Eros. Surviving the loss of the Donnager, he becomes captain of the Rocinante, gathering Naomi, Amos, and Alex into a found family and working under Fred Johnson's OPA patronage. In Caliban's War, a harder, more haunted Holden helps Prax search for his missing daughter on Ganymede, breaks with Fred over suspicions about the protomolecule, kills Augusto Nguyen to secure bioweapon codes, and allies with Avasarala and Bobbie Draper to expose Jules-Pierre Mao, all while deepening his committed romance with Naomi.
Description
A human man with dark hair, often greasy and unkempt, sometimes sticking straight out in zero gravity. His face is open and expressive, described as charming and vaguely naive; he was considered unusually pretty before his nose was injured. He is smaller than Miller and was described as weighing about twenty kilos more than him, though Miller is a foot taller. After the injury, his nose is crooked and has a badly healed lump. Tall athletic Earther, broad shoulders, fair skin, short brown hair, blue eyes, clean-shaven with strong jawline. A tall man with messy, overgrown hair and a scraggly, patchy beard whose facial hair grows in varying lengths and curls. In the disguise he wears a badly fitting green jumpsuit stenciled “Somnambulist” on the back and “Philips” on the front pocket, and carries his gun openly. A brown-haired human man with a generic Montana farm-boy appearance. He wears clothing suitable for ship operations.
