Josephus Miller begins as a weary, hard-drinking detective for Star Helix Security on Ceres, a lanky Belter in a porkpie hat whose routine missing-persons case to find Julie Mao spirals into an obsession that drags him into the heart of the protomolecule conspiracy. Fired and adrift, he allies with James Holden through the horrors of Eros and ultimately sacrifices himself, staying aboard the transformed station to guide it into Venus, where he finds Julie's consciousness among the alien structures. In Caliban's War, a thin, gray, worn version of Miller resurfaces unexpectedly aboard the Rocinante, a spectral echo shaped by the protomolecule who insists that he and Holden need to talk.
Description
A lanky middle-aged Belter lawman approaching his fiftieth birthday stands with the tired posture of someone who has seen every vice the asteroid can offer. His light skin flushes pink across his legs when he stands too long under the shower, using up a day and a half of rationed hot water while he processes the previous night's drinking. Expressive eyes that can change in an instant are sometimes hidden by looking away, and he habitually tips back his hat before wading into confrontations, dressed in his last set of clean clothes with the quiet resolve of a man who long ago stopped expecting the universe to be fair. A two-meter-tall Belter man in his forties or fifties with a lot of mileage wears a white shirt and dark pants beneath a goofy porkpie hat that makes him stand out in a crowd. Thinning hair shows where he runs his fingers through it, and his face is drawn and tired with a sometimes fake smile, balanced by unnervingly gentle eyes that convey sad or distant expressions and a rueful smile. He must duck his head in low corridors and sits with a grunt and popping knees, his lean low-gravity frame showing the wear of a veteran cop who can appear both gentle and exhausted even as tears track into his hair or he stretches against kinks in his neck and back. A tall lanky Belter man with a skinny build and elongated limbs from growing up in the low gravity of the Belt. His dour face carries a constant mild apology with fair skin stretched over sharp weary features. He wears a rumpled gray suit and his ever-present porkpie hat, his posture bent forward like a fighter protecting his soft spots as he navigates the crowded stations and corridors with careful grace. A thin, gray, visibly worn Belter man. His clothing and specific facial features are not described in these chapters.
