At eighteen, Manéo Jung-Espinoza sets out as a long, thin Belter whose body bears the cost of a three-month transit without food and with little recycled water. He is found in the cockpit of the Y Que, pale and malnourished, wrapped in a blanket and held in place by restraints. His brief appearance makes him the novel’s first glimpse of the danger and audacity surrounding the Ring.

Description

Manéo is eighteen, with a long, thin Belter frame and narrow, chicken-like shoulders. He is pale and malnourished, his appearance made more gaunt by the effects of prolonged deprivation; a ratty little beard and messy hair add to his disheveled look. Instead of powered clothing, he is wrapped in a plain blanket tucked into cockpit restraints. His frail, depleted presence is distinctive, though the text does not specify his eye color or finer facial features.
