Dobby enters the series as a downtrodden house-elf enslaved to the Malfoy family, whose fierce, misguided devotion to Harry Potter leads him to sabotage Harry's return to Hogwarts in an effort to keep him from the dangers of the Chamber of Secrets. After Harry tricks Lucius Malfoy into freeing him with a sock, Dobby becomes a jubilant free elf sworn to eternal friendship. By the time of the Triwizard Tournament, he has found paid work at Hogwarts under Dumbledore, insisting on wages and clothes, though he still struggles with ingrained habits of self-punishment. His steady loyalty to Harry and his growing sense of self make him a living example of what freedom can mean for house-elves.
Description
This small, thin house-elf has an ugly brown face marked by a long, thin pointed nose and enormous green eyes the size of tennis balls, often bulging or crossed in distress. His large bat-like ears quiver expressively, framing a wide toothy smile, while ten long fingers are heavily wrapped in bandages. He wears a filthy, raggedy old pillowcase torn for arms and legs, hanging loosely on his grubby frame. His posture is abject and cowering, twisted in terror or self-punishment, exuding frantic, otherworldly energy. Dobby is a small, slight house-elf with enormous, bright green eyes, batlike ears, and a long nose as narrow as a pencil. His mismatched clothes look cheerfully improvised: a tea cozy worn as a hat and covered in badges, a tie patterned with horseshoes, children's soccer shorts, and odd socks, one black and the other striped pink and orange. His huge-eyed, earnest expression gives him an almost painfully open air, while his patched-together outfit makes him seem both eccentric and endearing.
