Albus Dumbledore, the silver-bearded, twinkle-eyed headmaster of Hogwarts, begins the series as a benevolent, almost whimsical figure who delivers the infant Harry to the Dursleys and later explains the mysteries of the Sorcerer's Stone. As threats mount, his authority is tested: he is suspended through Lucius Malfoy's scheming during the Chamber of Secrets crisis, and Cornelius Fudge doubts his judgment about Sirius Black. By the end of the Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore has become a wartime leader. He unmasks the false Moody, defies the Ministry by telling the school the truth about Cedric's murder, breaks with Fudge, and begins rallying allies against the returned Voldemort.
