Demir Grappo

Demir is Adriana’s son and deeply shaped by her legacy. Their relationship is affectionate but complicated by her wish that he return to Ossa and resume his career; they last played Kings and Pawns shortly before her death.

Montego says he is a Grappo by adoption, but their relationship is independent and neither presumes to command the other.

Tadeas is Demir’s uncle and a trusted adviser. He counsels Demir on military and political decisions and reminds him of his responsibilities, while Demir turns to him for candid strategic discussion.

Demir commands Idrian in the campaign and brings him along to guard against an enemy breacher. He also deliberately shows Idrian the attack to restore his confidence in Demir’s leadership.

Kizzie and Demir are close friends. She investigates his mother’s murder and tries to help him, but her actions indirectly contribute to his confrontation with Capric. Father Vorcien later proposes that they marry, though Demir finds the prospect personally complicated.

Demir is trying to rescue Thessa from Ivory Forest because he needs her expertise and the schematics she carried. He sees her success in recreating the phoenix channel as crucial to the Grappo family’s future.

Demir sees Axio’s body during the rescue, but arrives too late to save him.

Breenen manages the Hyacinth Hotel and handles Demir’s communications and press releases. Demir trusts him with sensitive information, and Breenen keeps him informed about the attack on the hotel and the letter concerning Capric.

Jorfax’s glassdancers serve under Demir’s military command as scouts. She confronts him about their deaths, and they cooperate on recalling scouts and planning the next battle.

Demir uses his new sixteen-percent ownership stake to compel Filur, the glassworks overseer, to give him a tour. He bribes and pressures Filur while concealing his search for Thessa.

Father Vorcien likes Demir but has helped undermine him through Capric and seeks to bind him to the Vorcien family. He offers Demir Kizzie’s hand in marriage in exchange for ending his feud with Capric and returning to command the war.

Demir takes command after Stavri’s disastrous defeat and criticizes the prior leadership, while planning to outperform him against Kerite.

Demir’s memories of a burning city and Holikan’s destruction haunt him as he addresses his soldiers. Thessa tells Breenen that Demir has already explained Holikan to her and that she has forgiven him for his limited responsibility.

Kastora’s legacy matters to Demir’s work with Thessa; Demir funds the phoenix-channel project, which Thessa hopes will honor the work and memory of her mentor.

Duala served as Demir’s spymaster when he was provincial governor and now works as an information broker. He hires her to locate Thessa and investigate Ivory Forest.

Gregori supports Demir’s appointment and favors his blunt, irreverent manner, while urging him to defend the capital.

Demir orders Halfwing to prepare the artillery battery, whose concealed cannons help spring his trap against Kerite’s cavalry.

Hammish spent time with Demir in the woods during Demir’s childhood and encouraged Adriana to arrange proper tactical instruction for him.

Demir has known Harlen since he first began betting as a boy. Harlen handles his wagers and assists him in calling in Lechauri’s debt.

Jona is Demir’s distant cousin and a longtime friend of the Grappo family. He provides the use and secrecy of his glassworks after Demir is injured.

Demir and Lechauri were friends from childhood and once wrote a play together. Demir uses Lechauri’s gambling debt to recruit him to obtain confidential Magna and Ivory Forest records.

Mahren is the Hyacinth porter on duty at the concierge’s desk. Demir asks him to identify the Cinder captain and send a conciliatory case of wine.

Myria is the mayor of rebellious Holikan. Demir accepts her surrender without executing her, rejects the customary punishment of the city, and pledges its people his protection.

As a member of the Inner Assembly, Sammi is among those who appoint Demir to command. She is grieving the deaths of close family members in the Foreign Legion’s assassination.

Demir won Ulina’s share of the glassworks in a heated gambling session; he jokes that she might later marry into the Grappo family, but neither treats that prospect as an actual relationship.

Aelia is an enemy on the Inner Assembly and orders Dorlani operatives to steal Thessa’s project. Demir sees her as a threat to his guild-family and the phoenix-channel effort.
