York begins as a crawler watched carefully by Dante, and his history as someone from a hive who has always felt alone shadows the way others wonder whether he survived. Later he is a captain aboard the Homecoming Queen, where he stays behind rather than follow orders and turns toward poetry. By the end, he is identified as the ship’s sole living creature, writing in the stillness, a solitary figure whose inwardness has become his defining presence.
Description
York is a Saccathian and mantis-type crawler, distinguished by tentacles on his face; he cannot fly. His exact coloring, height, build, eyes, and facial structure beyond those tentacles are not specified. He is seen wearing a Squirties uniform shirt printed with a smiling face and streams of fuel, an incongruously jaunty garment against his thoughtful, solitary bearing.
