Rysn begins the series as a young Thaylen merchant apprentice traveling with her babsk, Vstim, nervously learning the art of honest trade during a tense negotiation with the Shin trader Thresh-son-Esan. A fall during a later voyage leaves her paralyzed, and by Rhythm of War she has rebuilt her life as a trader in her own right, moving in a hovering fabrial chair and caring for the young larkin Chiri-Chiri. Now entrusted with dangerous secrets about the hidden Sleepless, she turns once more to her old mentor, their relationship matured from teacher and pupil into one of mutual trust and shared responsibility.
