The Parshendi are a race of squat, carapace-armored warriors with marbled black-and-red skin who serve as the Alethi's great enemy in The Way of Kings. Their order to have the Shin assassin Szeth murder King Gavilar Kholin ignites the Vengeance Pact and a grinding war on the Shattered Plains, where Dalinar, Adolin and Kaladin all face them in battle. Dalinar comes to question the purpose and human cost of the war, and Kaladin notes their reverence for their dead. By Rhythm of War the Parshendi appear only in passing, as a name from the earlier conflict whose role has been overtaken by the wider struggle.
