Kalak, also known as Kelek, is one of the ten Heralds of the Almighty, a figure first glimpsed at the close of a Desolation in The Way of Kings, where, weary and traumatized, he reluctantly agrees with Jezrien to abandon the Oathpact and leaves his Shardblade behind, burdened by guilt at forsaking Taln to endure torment alone. In the cultures of Roshar his name survives as a deity invoked in everyday exclamations, a reverence at odds with the man himself. By Rhythm of War, the once-revered High Judge and witness to the binding of Ba-Ado-Mishram has become short, thin-haired, indecisive and given to nervous laughter, honored at the honorspren fortress yet shrinking from Adolin, a poignant portrait of what millennia of suffering leave behind.
Description
Kalak is a man whose appearance is described chiefly as worn by centuries and trauma; the text gives no precise details of his face, hair, coloring, height, or build. His clothing is not described in detail. He carries a Shardblade, an imposing sword that stands out against his otherwise unspecified attire. His presence is grave and exhausted, suggesting age beyond ordinary measure. No physical appearance is described for Kelek. The name functions as a divine reference and an invocation, without details of a body, face, clothing, or other visual traits. Kalak is a short man with thinning, wispy hair and weary eyes. His features and coloring are not described in further detail, and he has the modest, unremarkable look of a minor city administrator rather than a grand hero. He favors an understated, formal appearance, carrying himself with a guarded, hesitant air. The contrast between his ordinary presence and the honorifics surrounding him is striking.
