Preservation, one of the sixteen Shards of Adonalsium, first emerges in The Hero of Ages as the enigmatic mist spirit that haunts Vin, scratching symbols in ash and quietly guiding her and Sazed toward the truth of the cosmic struggle against Ruin. Its subtle interventions prove decisive in averting the world's annihilation, after which its power passes to Sazed, who unites it with Ruin to become Harmony. In the later era, Preservation survives not as a presence but as a foundational force: a god of the ancient world, one half of Harmony's divided nature, and the stabilizing aspect reflected in harmonium and in the Investiture granted to people at their creation.

Description

A misty figure roughly the shape of a man, humanoid in form with shifting, insubstantial outlines that suggest motion—kneeling, scratching, or waving arms. Its edges fade and evaporate into swirling mist, lacking solid features or color. The form hovers ethereally, semi-transparent against a backdrop of ash. It exudes an otherworldly, transient presence, constantly on the verge of dissolution. Preservation has no described physical appearance or concrete form in the text. No face, body, coloring, clothing, or distinguishing features are established. The text gives Preservation no definite body, face, age, or clothing. As a visual interpretation, the Shard might be rendered as a quiet, pale radiance—blue-white and crystalline, with a steady, sheltering quality rather than a sharply defined human shape. Its presence should feel enduring and restrained, like light held in reserve.
