Solivagus first appears in The Will of the Many as a mysterious, uncharted island whose existence is only hinted at through cryptic references and the unexplained disappearance of several Hierarchy expeditions. Across the series it evolves from a mere cartographic blank into a living, sentient realm whose shifting geography and ancient ruins actively reshape the political and metaphysical stakes of the Hierarchy’s rule. By the later books, Solivagus is revealed to be both prison and crucible: a place that tests bloodlines, rewrites oaths, and ultimately decides whether the Hierarchy’s millennia-old order will endure or be unmade.
