The Caten Sewers begin as little more than a fetid, lightless underworld beneath the capital, but across the series they steadily transform from a passive backdrop into a strategic artery of the Hierarchy’s power and rebellion alike. What starts as a place of concealment and escape gradually becomes a contested battleground where secret meetings, assassinations, and the movement of illicit goods all converge. By the later books the tunnels are no longer simply a means of getting from one district to another; they are a living network whose control can decide the fate of uprisings, coups, and the very survival of the capital itself.
