The compartments of the Hogwarts Express, with their wood paneling, cushioned benches, sliding doors and countryside-framing windows, serve as the recurring threshold between the Muggle world and Hogwarts. In the first book, a shared compartment is where Harry meets Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Draco Malfoy, and where the trio's friendship begins over a feast of wizard sweets. By the third book the cozy space turns menacing when a dementor boards the train and Remus Lupin drives it off. In the fourth book it hosts tense talk of the Quidditch World Cup's Dark Mark and Malfoy's taunts about the coming Triwizard Tournament. Across the series the compartment changes little, but the conversations inside it grow steadily darker.
