An orphan boy of ten, Olver begins as a small, awkward figure whose passion for Snakes and Foxes gives him a comforting ritual amid the bustle of camp. His broad grin and earnest efforts to be useful win him notice, though his attempts to keep pace with the adults can get ahead of him. He remains a vivid reminder of the children swept into the grown-up world of danger and flight.
Description
Olver is a short, skinny boy whose slight, somewhat awkward build makes him look younger than ten. His hair is often tousled, and his wide ears stand out beside a face most memorable for its enormous, wholehearted grin. He wears practical clothes, including a little jacket, and carries a scrap of red cloth marked for Snakes and Foxes, with his game pieces tucked carefully inside. His energy is eager and earnest, softened by a trace of shyness.
