The old Countess Zúbova appears only in a brief, wry observation about her efforts to cheat age. Her false curls and false teeth make her a memorable emblem of the social world’s devotion to appearances, but Tolstoy gives her no further personal history or arc.
Description
The old Countess Zúbova is distinguished by false curls and false teeth, details that make her efforts to preserve a youthful appearance unmistakable. Beyond those features, the text does not specify her build, complexion, eyes, facial shape, or dress. Her presence is best conveyed through the contrast between age and careful artifice, without adding unsupported visual details.
