Andrúsha appears only briefly, as a child whose morning obstinacy gives way to helpless tears. In his distress and his later clinging affection for his mother, Tolstoy catches the unruly sincerity of childhood rather than a larger, completed arc.
Description
Andrúsha is an eldest boy, but the text offers no further account of his height, coloring, hair, eyes, or facial features. His most distinctly described appearance is simple and unpolished: he has jumped from bed still wearing his shirt, rumpled and undressed for the day. His childlike presence is expressed through restless resistance and tearful, unguarded emotion.
