The Rocinante begins life as the Tachi, a Martian Congressional Republic Navy fast-attack corvette aboard the battleship Donnager, until the Donnager is destroyed and Jim Holden's surviving crew escape on her and rename her after Don Quixote's horse. Under Holden, with Naomi Nagata as engineer, Alex Kamal as pilot and Amos Burton as mechanic, the stolen warship becomes a nominally independent gunship operating under OPA cover. By Caliban's War she has become the crew's home and a hired weapon for Fred Johnson's OPA, carrying them into the protomolecule crisis on Ganymede and Io, where she proves both her firepower and the bonds of the people aboard her.
