Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon, begins the series as the breadbasket of the outer planets, its mirror-lit agricultural domes feeding stations across the Belt and the Jovian system. In Leviathan Wakes it serves as a stable backdrop and a stop on the paths of travelers fleeing the growing chaos after Eros. In Caliban's War it becomes the flashpoint of the series' next crisis: a protomolecule-hybrid creature slaughters UN Marines and Martian Marines on the surface, triggering open battle that wrecks the orbital mirrors and collapses the moon's fragile ecosystem. Its ruin, and the children kidnapped there for illicit protomolecule experiments, drive Prax Meng's desperate search and expose the conspiracy linking Mao-Kwikowski and corrupt UN officials.
