Chasmfiends are colossal, crustacean-like greatshells native to the Shattered Plains, whose gemhearts fuel the bloody war between the Alethi and the Parshendi. In The Way of Kings they are portrayed as terrifying predators of the chasms, monsters that can devour bridgemen and soldiers alike and whose hunts claim countless lives. By Rhythm of War the perspective shifts dramatically: seen through the eyes of those attuned to the spren and the land, a chasmfiend appears sleek, graceful and majestic, basking in light and trailed by its bonded chasmspren, revealing these beasts as part of Roshar's living, spren-woven ecology rather than mere monsters.
