Shadesmar, the Cognitive Realm, first appears in The Way of Kings as a haunting vista beneath a black sky, where an endless ocean of glass beads stretches to the horizon. Jasnah Kholin travels there through Soulcasting, and Shallan Davar stumbles into it unbidden. Both glimpses hint at a hidden layer of reality bound to spren and to human thought. By Rhythm of War, Shadesmar has grown from a mysterious glimpse into a fully realized theater of the war, home to spren civilizations and contested by the forces of Odium.
