Rayse is the original Vessel of Odium, one of the Shards of Adonalsium, first glimpsed in The Way of Kings through a letter describing him as among the most loathsome, crafty, and dangerous beings in existence and as the destroyer who Splintered the Shards Aona and Skai. Across the series he looms as the hidden hand behind Odium's war on Roshar. By Rhythm of War his reign ends in death, and his Shard passes to Taravangian, who inherits Rayse's knowledge and schemes while fearing that the power may come to rule him in turn.

His clothing and any distinguishing marks or accessories are likewise unspecified. If portrayed, his reputation for craftiness and danger may inform his expression or bearing, but should not be used to invent physical characteristics. Shard of Adonalsium
