The Deep begins as the perilous, lightless mining tunnels beneath Lykos colony on Mars, the birthplace of Darrow’s rebellion and the literal foundation of Red oppression. By the later books, the name is reborn on Europa, where the same word now describes sprawling underwater cities carved into the moon’s rocky core, serving as hidden strongholds for the rising Republic. This evolution mirrors the saga’s shift from subterranean struggle to interplanetary warfare, transforming a symbol of entrapment into a beacon of resistance.
