Roanoke Colony begins as a bold Colonial Union experiment in dual-wave settlement, intended to secure humanity's foothold beyond the Conclave's reach. Its abandonment following a direct Conclave threat transforms it from a living frontier into a cautionary legend, referenced in later books as the moment the CU's expansionist dreams collided with interstellar politics. By the time of The Shattering Peace, Roanoke exists only in memory and historical records, symbolizing both the cost of defiance and the shifting balance of power among the stars.
