The Karna-Hlaven System emerges as a pivotal frontier zone in the Old Man's War universe, first appearing in The Shattering Peace as a contested region where the Colonial Union and Conclave forces clash over strategic resources and territorial boundaries. Its evolution reflects the broader galactic conflict's shift from outright warfare to uneasy diplomacy, with the system becoming a testing ground for new peace initiatives. The system's dual-planet structure—Karna and Hlaven—creates natural chokepoints that make it both militarily valuable and diplomatically sensitive throughout the series.
