Mistwraiths begin as the grotesque scavengers of the Final Empire's misty nights: translucent, malleable masses that fuse mismatched animal bones, limbs, and heads into horrifying bodies and crawl like enormous centipedes after carrion. The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages reveal them as kin to the kandra, mindless cousins that build skeletons from whatever they scavenge, including stone, metal, and wood. In the Homeland they are kept smaller and are tied directly to the kandra's origins. By the era of The Lost Metal, mistwraiths have faded into folklore as face-stealing monsters said to hide under beds, while a far stranger, pitch-black tentacled figure that repels the mist rises from the ocean dark and twists the old legend into something new and alien.
