The Hemalurgic spikes embedded in the body of Ironeyes, the ancient kandra-turned-immortal better known as Marsh, are the source of his eerie, centuries-long survival and his unsettling supernatural abilities. In the era of Wax and Wayne, they mark Ironeyes as a living relic of the Final Empire, a figure of frontier legend whose spiked eyes still grant him the sight and powers stolen through Hemalurgy. As the series progresses, Hemalurgy itself evolves: the Set experiments with smaller, more refined spikes of various sizes, contrasting sharply with the crude, traditional spikes Marsh bears, and the old spikes come to symbolize both the danger of Ruin's legacy and the knowledge Harmony's agents use to counter new threats.
