Mereline appears as a lieutenant whose straightforward manner cuts through the deference surrounding the Hasting family. She cusses them out rather than treating their status as a reason for restraint, leaving a vivid impression of a woman who speaks plainly and holds her ground. The book gives little further detail about her history, but her brief appearance makes her blunt courage unmistakable.
Description
Mereline is a woman with short blonde hair, worn in a practical style that keeps it clear of her face. No further details of her height, build, complexion, or eye color are specified. Her bearing is brisk and self-possessed, and she gives the impression of someone more interested in getting to the point than making an impression. She is identified by her lieutenant's role; specific uniform details are not provided.
