The Deck of Dragons is the Malazan world's great divinatory instrument, a deck of cards organized into Houses and Holds whose readings reveal the movements of gods, Ascendants, and the powers that move behind mortal affairs. In Gardens of the Moon it hovers at the edge of the narrative as part of the backdrop of shifting divine influence. In Deadhouse Gates it takes concrete form: cards drawn from a velvet bag turn up Obelisk and the Rope amid High House Death, foreshadowing upheaval, assassination, and dark intent. It is made clear there that the Deck is a serious tool of reading the currents of power, not a mundane game of chance.
