Malaz City is the weathered port capital of Malaz Island, the humble birthplace of the Malazan Empire, crouched beneath the brooding fortress of Mock's Hold. In Gardens of the Moon it appears as a tattered harbour town haunted by its imperial past, the place where Kellanved and Dancer first rose to power and where the Empress Laseen's reign began in blood. Deadhouse Gates returns to its claustrophobic harbour district, a maze of narrow alleys sheltering the eerie Deadhouse, an Azath house whose mysteries draw ascendants and would-be gods alike. Across the series the city remains a quiet but potent symbol: small and shabby on its surface, yet the seed from which an empire and its deepest secrets grew.
