Aren is a major city of the Seven Cities subcontinent, first mentioned in Gardens of the Moon as a city that fell to Malazan conquest, a reminder of the Empire's far-reaching campaigns. In Deadhouse Gates it becomes a focal point of the Whirlwind rebellion, serving as the last refuge for Coltaine's Chain of Dogs. The city's High Fist Pormqual refuses to sally out to save Coltaine's army, which is massacred within sight of Aren's walls. Pormqual's army is then betrayed and slaughtered, leaving Aren a symbol of imperial failure and tragedy.
