Hedge is a Bridgeburner sapper in Whiskeyjack's Ninth Squad and Fiddler's inseparable partner in demolitions, a man whose cheerful appetite for Moranth munitions sits alongside a surprising soft spot for strays and the vulnerable. In Gardens of the Moon he helps dig out trapped soldiers, prepares the explosives meant to mine Darujhistan, and watches over the recovering Captain Paran, adopting him much as he would a stray dog. The flash-burns and scorched hair beneath his cap betray the toll of his trade without dimming his spirit. By Deadhouse Gates he survives mainly in reputation, remembered as a specialist in cussers and other volatile weapons of war.

Description

Hedge is a broad, wide-shouldered man with black hair gathered into a ponytail, its knot decorated with charms and fetishes. Blue woad marks his bared arm, where white scars cut across the tattooing; his features are sometimes streaked with white dust and sweat. He wears practical, worn soldier’s clothes, carrying himself with the patient ease of a veteran sapper. The charms, scars, and dust give him a quietly distinctive, work-worn presence. Hedge’s burned hair is concealed beneath an ugly leather cap, often scorched and battered from campaign life. The available descriptions give little detail of his face or build, so his cap and eager, animated demeanor are his clearest visual signatures. He wears practical soldier’s clothing suited to a sapper, with the rough, lived-in appearance of someone accustomed to handling weapons and munitions. A sapper whose gear includes Moranth munitions and cusser quarrels—deadly explosives that require steady hands and careful handling. His clothing is practical and functional, designed for a soldier who works with dangerous materials. His stance suggests alertness, the wariness of one who knows that a single mistake could prove fatal.
