Theodatus began as a descendant of Gothic heroes who had conquered Italy, but his education in the writings of Plato and Cicero had shaped him into something quite different from his warrior ancestors. When he purchased the sceptre through ingratitude and murder, he found himself a weak and fearful monarch thrust into a role that terrified him. His reign would be marked by his willingness to surrender Sicily, offer crowns of gold, and promise auxiliaries at the first sign of danger, ultimately leading to his degradation and chains in Constantinople.

Description

A middle-aged Gothic king with fair skin and light hair, his appearance marked by the unusual combination of royal Gothic attire and the scholarly demeanor of someone who has spent years studying classical philosophy. He carries books and scrolls as naturally as other kings might carry swords, his features reflecting both the dignity of his royal descent and the contemplative nature that has made him ill-suited for the harsh demands of Gothic kingship. His bearing suggests someone who would prefer the quiet of a library to the clamor of a battlefield.
