Metrophanes of Cyzicus was chosen as Patriarch of Constantinople during a critical period of attempted union between the Eastern and Western churches. His consecration in the nearly vacant Hagia Sophia symbolized both the declining fortunes of Byzantium and the complex ecclesiastical politics that preceded the final fall of Constantinople.
Description
A 15th-century Byzantine patriarch with a long, graying beard and stern features, wearing elaborate ecclesiastical vestments in gold and deep red. His olive skin and dark eyes convey the authority of Byzantine clergy, while his elaborate headdress and robes mark his position as Patriarch of Constantinople during its final decades.
