Lilius served as ambassador of the usurper Phocas to the Persian king Chosroes, bearing the severed heads of the deposed emperor Maurice and his sons as tokens of victory. His grim embassy marked the final severing of old alliances and the beginning of a new and bloody chapter between empires.
Description
Lilius presents the stern and composed face of a Byzantine ambassador, with dark hair and beard framing penetrating eyes. He wears the embroidered robes of imperial diplomacy, his posture rigid with formal dignity, his hands occupied with the weight of his grim burden.
