John V Palaiologos was among the most disposed of Byzantine princes to embrace the Latin church, having been formed in his infancy by his mother Anne of Savoy. His reign was marked by extensive travels to Western countries, including visits to Venice, Ferrara, and Florence, where he sought support for church union and observed the changing political landscape of medieval Europe.
