Gontran was the pious king of Burgundy who sent an army to invade Gothic possessions. Unlike many rulers of his time, he was known to reproach his own leaders for their crimes, demonstrating a religious conscience that influenced his approach to kingship and warfare.

He wears richly decorated robes with gold trim appropriate to his royal status, and his long hair follows the distinctive fashion of Frankish kings.
