Clotilde, a Burgundian princess who became queen of the Franks, embodied a piety that did not consist in the forgiveness of injuries. She pressed her sons to revenge her father's death and reminded her husband how effectively pious foundations might propitiate the Deity, understanding the complex relationship between faith and political necessity.
Description
Clotilde possesses the royal dignity of a Burgundian princess who has become Frankish queen. Her bearing reflects both her Christian piety and her understanding that sanctity need not mean the forgiveness of injuries. She carries herself with the composed authority of someone who has learned to navigate both the spiritual and temporal realms.
