Apollo of Daphne existed as the central cult statue in the great temple at Daphne, a colossal representation of the god that dominated the sanctuary space. The statue depicted Apollo in the act of libation, pouring from a golden cup toward the earth below. The temple and its statue became focal points of religious conflict, ultimately consumed by fire that left only the temple walls as a monument to its former glory.
Description
A colossal statue that nearly fills its capacious sanctuary, the figure of Apollo depicted in proportions suggesting the strength of a thousand men. The god is shown in a bending attitude, eternally pouring libation from a golden cup toward the earth. The statue's massive scale and golden details create an overwhelming sense of divine presence within the temple space.
