The Entrance Hall of Hogwarts Castle is the grand, flagstoned threshold through which every student first passes, with its sweeping marble staircase and the doors to the Great Hall. In the first year it is where Professor McGonagall receives the nervous new students before the Sorting. Later it becomes a gathering point for school news and drama: notices of Hogsmeade visits and Dementor-guarded grounds in Harry's third year, and in his fourth the arrival of the Triwizard delegations, the Goblet of Fire's placement, and the excitement of the Yule Ball. Over the series it shifts from a place of wonder into a busy crossroads where the castle's public life plays out.
