The Black Lake is the vast, deep body of water on the Hogwarts grounds, first encountered as the misty, glassy crossing by which first-years arrive at the castle in small boats. Home to the giant squid, merpeople, and grindylows, it serves as a backdrop to school life before taking center stage in later years. In Prisoner of Azkaban its shore becomes the site of a desperate Dementor attack, repelled by a time-travelling Harry's stag Patronus, and in Goblet of Fire its depths host the Triwizard Tournament's perilous Second Task, revealing the hidden merpeople village beneath its surface.
