Azkaban is the wizarding world's dreaded island prison, set in the middle of the North Sea and guarded by soul-draining Dementors who feed on its inmates' happiness. It looms over the third book after Sirius Black becomes the first known prisoner to escape, revealing that its walls are not impregnable. In the fourth book its shadow lengthens through the Pensieve memories of the trials that sent Death Eaters there, and through the revelation that Barty Crouch Jr. was smuggled out. By the end of the book Dumbledore warns that the Dementors' loyalty to the Ministry cannot be trusted once Voldemort returns.
