Sir Cadogan is a short, squat, and comically belligerent knight who lives in a portrait at Hogwarts, accompanied by his fat dapple-gray pony and an oversized sword he can barely wield. In Prisoner of Azkaban he guides Harry, Ron, and Hermione to the Divination tower and later becomes the temporary guardian of Gryffindor Tower after the Fat Lady's portrait is slashed, tormenting students with constantly changing passwords and challenges to duels. His tenure ends in disgrace when Neville's written-down list of his passwords lets Sirius Black into the dormitory. By Goblet of Fire he has faded into castle lore, remembered only in passing as the mad knight.
Description
A short and squat knight stuffed into a clanking metal suit of armor stands beside his fat dapple-gray pony. Grass stains mark his armored knees from frequent clumsy tumbles, and he brandishes an oversized sword with wild hops and swings that often send him sprawling face-down. When he pushes up his visor a flushed, sweating face appears, reflecting his energetic exertions and jolly nature as he joins festive gatherings with monks and headmasters, raising a flagon of mead in toast. Sir Cadogan is identified as a knight depicted in a castle portrait, but his appearance is not described. The text gives no details of his face, hair, build, armor, clothing, colors, or distinguishing features.
