The Owl-Eyed Man stumbles through Gatsby's library, marveling at the realism of the books amid the revelry, later appearing in a long duster at the funeral, wiping rain from his thick glasses in sincere grief. One of the few who attends Gatsby's sparsely populated service, he mourns the host's genuine heart beneath the facade. His puzzled authenticity pierces the novel's theme of hollow extravagance.

Description

Stout and middle-aged, his most striking feature is the enormous owl-eyed spectacles dominating his round face. Thick glasses often need wiping, framing eyes wide with perpetual puzzlement. A pleasant expression softens his features, even when somewhat drunk. He favors a long duster coat, his solid build moving with amiable awkwardness.
